STYLES OF WRITING TO REFLECT ALTERNATIVE ENERGY

V. Ryan © 2006-2021

Commemorative stamps are normally presented to the buyer in a carefully designed and illustrated package. A clear title is usually prominent on the package. As you are designing commemorative stamps based on the theme Wind Power, you may find the following exercise helpful. Look carefully at the styles of font/writing used to present the words ‘environment’ and ‘energy’ written below. The styles used on the left hand side are basic and have no feel, emotion or imagination attached to them. However, the styles of font/writing on the right hand side have been developed give a certain feel to the real meaning of the words.

The word ‘environment’ has been presented to give the feeling of wind blowing across the entire word. Some of the letters have been stretched, as if fluttering in the wind. This style has been chosen as wind power is associated with protecting the environment against polluting forms of energy generation.

The word ‘energy’ has been designed to look as if it is being blown by the wind. In addition, a modern wind mill (electricity generator) has been added. This has been drawn in a modern style. The picture of the modern wind powered electricity generator and the style of writing all give ‘life’ and meaning to the word ‘energy’.

Below is written the word ‘electricity’. Design a style of writing to represent this word but emphasise the role played by producing electricity through environmental friendly technology such as wind power. The style of writing and the use of images and colour will play an important role. Add brief notes to explain your design.
