Select your best idea. On the sheet below, develop your design. Include notes and sketches that explain: Your selection of materials and finishes. Your chosen method of construction and manufacture. The design features, especially Art Deco features. Dimensions / sizes. |
|||
I have designed a handle with two sunburst styles ‘ends’. The ends have been drilled (blind holes), so that the rail stays in position, when the ends are bolted in place.
Chromed steel Art Deco butt hinges are used to allow the lid to lift and shut. Chromed steel screws secure the hinges to the box and its lid.
Each corner is constructed using rebate joints. This is a relatively strong joint and can be marked out and cut easier than dovetail joints. Unlike dovetail joints, this type of joint has the advantage of not showing on the outside of the container.
The final choice of materials is mahogany, with a band of rosewood veneer, down the centre of the container.
The working drawing seen below, includes a front, side and plan view. Adding dimensions (measurements) is important. Usually a minimum of six dimensions are added, although this number depends on the complexity of the design. |
