Four symbols seen opposite are often seen at the coast and on beaches. They warn swimmers and tourists of certain dangers.
An effective symbol is simple in design that is easily understood. Usually a symbol will have two or at most three colours.

The authorities in Hawaii have decided to put a new warning symbol on all pleasure beaches. Recently hospital statistics have shown that a number of swimmers have collided with small rowing boats whilst swimming in the sea.
