What is Laminated Card?
Packaging manufactured from laminated card, is made up of paperboard (73%), plastic (22%) and aluminium foil (5%). It is commonly used for the packaging of drinks.

What products have laminated card packaging?
Laminated card is commonly used to package fruit juice and milk . Wine can be stored in the short term, in this type of packaging. When laminated card incorporates other materials such as aluminum, more food products can be stored inside them. Recently, vegetables have been packaged in a laminated card / aluminium container. This is seen as an alternative to using tins.

Laminated card is suitable for drinks and more recently, other products such as vegetables. Laminated containers help keep their contents fresh for up to a year, without refrigeration (unless opened). This makes it ideal for the storage of perishable goods including drinks, on supermarket shelves and during transportation. Being relatively light compared to glass, transport costs are reduced. Furthermore, laminated packages can be manufactured into almost any shape, ensuring efficient storage (no waste space between packages). Laminated packages flex when dropped and knocked, protecting the contents. On the other hand, glass would simply break and shatter becoming a health hazzard.

Laminated card is composed of paperboard, polythene and sometimes aluminum foil. These ‘raw materials’ can be reclaimed during the recycling process. This means that laminated containers are environmentally friendly. Once reclaimed / recycled, the materials can be used for other products, such as egg boxes, paper bags and envelopes. The main raw material (wood) is sourced from sustainable forests. When a tree is cut down for processing at the paper mill, a sapling is planted. Consequently, a renewable raw material is being used.

Unlike a glass or plastic bottle, laminated card can be printed on directly. This saves materials and processing time. All this reduces the cost of manufacturing. The packaging can be 100% coloured, allowing for detailed graphics on every surface.

Laminated card packaging is used widely in over 150 countries world wide. It is probably one of the worlds most common forms of packaging, due to its versatility, environmentally friendly nature and cost effectiveness.
