Making a model is an essential part of the design process. In fact, it may be necessary to make several models in the course of designing a product. Often models begin in card form, then more resistant materials such as MDF, Styrofoam and Perspex are used. It is a good idea to use scrap / recycled material as this stage, especially as models are often scaled models.

It is just as important to evaluate any model manufactured during the design process. A scaled model will help in the evolution of a product, as models reveal fproblems and identify necessary changes.

The example evaluation is for the design of a rocking chair. A scaled model was first manufactured from scrap/recycled materials such as plywood and MDF. When the model was tested it was found to be unstable. If the chair 'rocked' back too far, it would topple backwards. This is potentially very dangerous. If a real model had not been made, the final manufactured chair would have been unsafe to sell.
