APPLYING A FINISH TO A TURNED BOWL
V. Ryan © 2012

Varnish is applied when the bowl is still on the face plate. However, the lathe is not turned on, the face plate is rotated by hand and varnish applied carefully.

When dry, the varnish can be ‘smoothed’ with fine glass paper or wire wool, with the lathe turned on. Several coats of varnish are applied, each coat being allowed to dry and then smoothed with glass paper, in the same way. Finally polish is applied.

The face plate is removed, leaving the pine glued to the bowl.

A chisel is used to remove the pine, by splitting it along its grain. As paper is glued between the pine and the bowl, the pine should split easily, leaving just the bowl.
