WOODWORKERS LATHE TOOLS - CHISELS AND SCRAPERS
V. Ryan © 2012

THE SQUARE END CHISEL

A square end chisel is often used after a gouge has been applied, to rough out a basic shape. If sharpened correctly, a lathe chisel should produce a more accurate and smoother finish.

THE SKEW CHISEL

A skew chisel can also be used to produce a smooth and accurate finish, after a gouge. The skew of the chisel allows the lathe operator to get into tight shapes / corners.

FULL ROUND SCRAPER

A full round scraper is used to cut hollow areas / internal curves. Some experienced wood turners prefer to use scrapers, ground to various shapes. If sharpened regularly, they produce a good finish.

SQUARE END SCRAPER

A flat scraper is used to produce a flat or level surface.
