RACK AND PINION

EXAMINATION QUESTION

V. Ryan 2004

1. The diagram below shows a fork lift truck. It is used to lift pallets, complete with their heavy loads. The forks on the front of the truck move up and down the vertical track. In the magnified area, draw the missing mechanism that allows movement of the forks.
A. In the circular area, add an enlarged drawing of the mechanism that allows the up / down motion of the forks
B. Label the important parts.
C. Explain how the mechanism works

EXPLANATION:

The driver controls the clockwise or anticlockwise motion of the pinion wheel. The pinion drives the rack either up or down. The rack is fixed to the forks and consequently they move in the same direction of the rack.
