Party Packs arrive in the shops in stylish boxes / packaging. This is usually manufactured from card with the insert being made from either lower quality, recycled card or vacuum formed low density polystyrene.

Card is popular as it is cheap and can be recycled. Also, colour and images can be applied using a number of printing techniques. Normally the card is lacquered to give the box a gloss / satin finish.

Usually the packages are cuboid in shape as this means that they can be transported and stacked on shelves easily, efficiently using space.
PARTS A and C

SOLID WHITE BOARD AND CARDBOARD

SOLID WHITE BOARD - This is normally top quality cardboard made from quality bleached wood pulp. It is the best card for printing on to and consequently it is used for hard backed books and more expensive items.

CARDBOARD - is thicker than paper as it is made up of a number of layers, glue or laminated together. The diagram opposite shows a net / development of a package. It can be folded to produce a carton.

PART B

LOW DENSITY POLYETHYLENE OR LOW DENSITY POLYSTYRENE

Polythene and Polyethylene can be moulded into almost any form due to their excellent moulding qualities. Used for the production of bottles, bowls, toys, tube etc... Both available in large sheets. There are two types: High density which is rigid and hard, and low density which is tough and flexible. Machine parts are generally made from high density polystyrene / polyethylene whilst bottles are made from the low density polystyrene / polyethylene.
