DESK ORGANISER

MANUFACTURING METHOD ONE

CUTTING THE PVC TUBES AND JOINING TO A VACUUM FORMED BASE

These desk organisers are made from PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride) tube. This material is supplied in a range of colours. It is quite soft and easy to cut, shape, machine and forms well when heated.

The examples shown opposite can be manufactured in a number of ways. One technique is explained below.

The length of the tube does not need to be marked out as a length of tube is placed in a ‘jig’. The jig is composed of two vee blocks bolted on to a steel base. The vee blocks prevent the round section PVC tube from slipping when being cut.
The tubes are cut to length using a band saw.

And the base and tubes are joined using an adhesive called ‘tensol cement’.

The ends of the tube are filed until smooth. Wet and dry paper is used to give a quality smooth finish. Then the  base and tubes are joined using an adhesive called ‘tensol cement’. This is a permanent adhesive and works because the surfaces it makes contact with are slightly melted. When pressed together they solidify, ensuring a strong joint.
