Product analysis involves looking closely at existing products and identifying how they work, the materials they are made from, the industrial processes used to manufacture them and their key features. It may also involves the designer asking the general public or potential customers what they think of the product. The aim of product analysis is to help the designer develop even better designs and products in the future.

A gardening trolley is seen below. Study it carefully (especially when considering it’s use by the elderly) and then complete the analysis by completing the information on:

A basic product analysis of truck 'A' is written below.

MATERIALS: Frame manufactured from steel tube, spray painted. The container is manufactured from HDPE (High Density Polyethylene), in a range of colours.

WHEELS: It has strong robust wheels, that enable it to carry heavy weights and also remain manoeuvrable. Synthetic rubber tyres minimise the noise at it is pushed along and ensures quite smooth movement.

MOVEMENT: Very good movement when travelling straight, although more difficult to handle when turning corners.

WEIGHT: It is relatively lightweight, as the materials, both the aluminium tubing and the HDPE are lightweight.

HANDLE: The handle is not height adjustable although it is reasonably comfortable to use.

ELDERLY USE: Easy to use by elderly people, although the handle is manufactured from relatively thin aluminium, making it difficult to grip if the user has arthritis in his / her fingers. Big wheels make the trolley easy to push along.

COST: £80.
