PIC MICROCONTROLLERS - TRAFFIC LIGHTS

V. Ryan © 2002

Below is a PIC Microcontroller connected to a model of a pedestrian crossing. We all use crossings as a safe way of crossing busy roads and they are especially safe of children. In the space below, list the stages involved in the operation of a pedestrian crossing.

QUESTION:

Having worked out the basic stages of the pedestrian crossing, develop and test a PIC Microcontroller flowsheet to operate the model. An example is shown below.

Macro ‘BEEP’ turns off the yellow light and turns on the red. It also creates a ‘beeping’ sound so that the pedestrian knows to cross. The green man also lights.

This is only one example of a possible solution. You may devise a very different solution that works even better and more efficiently than the example. The aim is to develop a simple answer to this every day problem.

QUESTION:

Test the program/flowchart system outlined above and see if it works. Can you suggest any improvements?
