To produce a comfortable handle for a food carrier, anthropometric data need to be collected, in the form of at least two measurements. The average measurement is then calculated using the ‘mean average’. Two necessary measurements are seen on the diagram of the hand below. |
1. Collect 10 measurements for ‘A’ and ‘B’ dimensions, from pupils in your class. 2. Work out the total for each column. 3. Calculate the mean average by dividing each total by the number of measurements in each column. |
How will the average measurements help in the design of an ergonomic handle for the food carrier? |
The average measurements for the width and length of a hand, will help me determine the size of the handle and its shape. This will ensure that the handle is comfortable to hold. Without the measurements, the handle could too small or too large, making the handle awkward to hold. |
Are there any other measurements that you think should be collected, to enable the ‘accurate’ ergonomic design for the handle? Mark the measurement on the sketch. Why is the measurement required? |
