It is sometimes difficult to complete homework at home. There can be a variety of reasons why this is the case - some are listed below. Which is the reason most likely to stop you completing your homework ? Which is the least likely to stop you working ? Write a number next to each reason. Number 1 means most likely etc.........

The TV is in the room where I work.
My younger brother / sister is playing in the same room.
My friends keep calling round to ask me to play outside.
My brother / sister is always playing loud music.
I have not written my homework properly in my diary.
I want to play on the Play Station / computer before I do any homework.
I have no table to work at or it is used by other people when I need it.

Organising your studying / learning is very important. In school you are normally sat in classroom, a workshop or a science laboratory. This means it is easier to learn in school than at home because there are less distractions.

Using the table below list all the distractions that can happen at home, that make it difficult to do your homework. There is an example to help you start your list.

DISTRACTION: The TV is on all the time

HOW IT MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO WORK:

When I try to work there is always something on the TV that interests me. I cannot concentrate because I want to watch all the programmes, and my homework suffers.

As a class / group discuss some or all of the distractions that pupils have listed.

Draw a rich picture showing how you could make it easy to work at home. You may need to include;

Turn the TV off.
Work in a separate room.
Do your homework before you go out with friends.
Have the right pens, pencils and equipment to complete homework to the right standard.
Concentrate on your work.
Ask your brothers and sisters to leave you alone until all your work has been completed.
Play music quietly in the background, if this helps.
Reward yourself when you complete your homework.
Check your homework diary so that you know the completion dates for homework.
Attend the school homework club.
