PRODUCT 4 - 100% HDPE CHAIR - BATCH PRODUCTION

V. Ryan © 2008-2017

Outdoor furniture can be manufactured from recycled plastic. High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is manufactured from recycled waste and is suitable for garden furniture. HDFE can be given the appearance of wood by the addition of colour pigments during the injection moulding process. However, HDPE retains the advantages of plastic and can be used to make a high quality products that stay attractive and easy to maintain for many years.

The folding mechanism is seen below. This chair is the same design as the teak chair seen earlier.

These chairs are very light and although fingers can be trapped because of the lightweight materials involved injury is rare. The chairs can be cleaned very easily with a damp cloth and stored outside, if necessary. They can be manufactured in a range of colours. They are more likely to break than teak if excessive weight is applied. If a chair breaks it can be sent for recycling as polyethylene can be recycled.

Materials such as polystyrene, nylon, polypropylene, polythene and polyethylene can be used in a process called injection moulding. These plastics are thermoplastics which means when they are heated and pressured in a mould they can be formed into different shapes.
The chair seen above is manufactured as a number of parts and then assembled to form a folding chair.

A simple diagram of an injection moulding machine is shown below. The seat of the HDPE chair is being manufactured.

The chair can also be manufactured as one piece (not a folding chair). The manufacturing sequence for this solid one piece chair is seen below.
