ANSWER

An animatronic system is usually a device that has moving parts, involves sound and lights. The movement, sound and lights are controlled by programmed electronics or a computer system. A good example is a life size character that moves. lights up and makes sounds automatically.

A range of mechanisms can be used to produce movement in animatronic systems. In the space below draw three different types of mechanisms and explain how they could be used in an animatronic system.

ANSWER

The animatronic system (a clown) seen below is composed of two arms that move, a bow tie that revolves and a hat with three ultra bright LEDs. The LEDs light in sequence. It is controlled by a PIC Microcontroller.

What does PIC mean?

ANSWER

Peripheral Interface Controllers

Why are bulbs being replaced by LEDs?

ANSWER

Light Emitting Diodes are more efficient that bulbs and only require three volts whereas bulbs consume more electricity. LEDs last on average three thousand hours of constant use. Bulbs need replacing regularly and often only last a few hours. LEDs come in a range of colours and are cheaper to purchase.
