RESOURCES

Stage One: The pupils will be given a design problem:

“When I work at home I find that my homework requires me to use a wide range of basic drawing and writing equipment. Unfortunately I find that while working this equipment becomes spread across the table and is difficult to find quickly. This means I cannot complete my homework as quickly as possible because equipment is not immediately at hand.”

This problem will be discussed at length with all the problems associated with the design problem being investigated in detail.

L. Read through the example problem / brief. Pupils formulate their own brief and read aloud

ICT. Some pupils will word process the problem and brief.

HWK. Complete problem and brief.

C. Pupils to carry out a survey of friends/family into want writing and drawing equipment they need to store Drawing equipment.

ICT Access and appropriate software.

Stage Two: The pupils will rewrite the design problem and then the design brief will be discussed (see example below). Both these will be written out roughly in preparation for placing on a presentation sheet.

“I am going to design and make a simple device/unit that will enable me to keep together all the pieces of drawing and writing equipment I need for completing my homework. The unit will probably include the following;

pencils, pens, rubber, compass, ruler, sharpener

any other required equipment”

Stage Three: The pupils will again be shown how to draw the standard border line and title block. Accuracy and neatness/tidiness will be emphasised. The pupils will be told that quality drawings/designs are more important than quantity. They will place on the presentation sheet the design brief and design problem; all printing to be block capitals and drawn between guidelines.
