DESIGN BRIEF

Many elderly people find it difficult to move around the home. Some elderly people are also very lonely and long for someone to talk to.

You have been approached by the worlds largest computer / robotics company to design a robot. The robot must do the following:

Be able to carry out a range of tasks such as answering the front door, the telephone, cooking meals etc......

The robot must also be able to entertain its owner through conversation.

The robot must be able to help the elderly person if he / she falls over or becomes ill.

TASKS

1. Draw two possible designs for the robot. (Remember - it must be able to go up and down stairs and manoeuver around a garden. The robot must not look exactly like a human.

2. Label the parts of each robot and explain what they do.

3. You must programme the robot, so that it can talk about interesting topics, with the old person. List 10 topics that you think the robot should understand, so that it can carry out an intelligent and relevant conversation. For instance, you may decide to programme the robot with knowledge of the Second World War or with knowledge of music of the 1950s.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

To achieve a high grade:

Draw two accurate robot designs and add notes/labels.
Your robot must have knowledge of ten topics. List the topics.
