THE IMPORTANCE OF EXPLODED DRAWINGS |
In Technical Drawing, an exploded isometric view, is a 3D drawing of a product, arranged so that all the parts / components can be seen in disassembled form. The reason for this style of drawing being called ‘exploded’, is that it looks as if a controlled explosion has taken place at the drawing’s centre and all that parts having being photographed, whilst in flight. The main function of an exploded drawing is to show the product disassembled. This style is typical of the assembly instructions supplied with ‘knockdown’ furniture. |
TYPICAL SELF-ASSEMBLY FURNITURE EXPLODED DRAWINGS |
Engineers find exploded drawings very useful, because they show the order in which parts / components are put together, forming the entire product (called assembly instructions). They are vital when repairs of complex engineered parts are carried out. These drawings are usually labelled, allowing the repair engineer to identify and replace faulty or damaged parts. In an exploded drawing, all the parts are drawn in alignment, making it easier to understand how they all fit together. |
Before attempting the exploded drawing of your design, try some of the ‘exploded drawing exercises, found in the technical drawing section of technologystudent.com. |
You may wish to complete the incomplete exploded drawing (below) by adding your design to the top of the follower |
OR DRAW YOUR OWN EXPLODED DRAWING |
The video shows one way your exploded drawing could be constructed. Normally drawings of this type begin with a vertical centre line, with some of the parts arranged in line with it. An isometric grid is very useful. |
