Water wheels have been in use for centuries. A modern version is the floating Hydro Underflow Water Wheel. The most efficient designs are based on a rotating ‘barrel’, with hydrodynamic blades. The blades have been developed to catch the water current. They are the equivalent of turbine blades, designed to take advantage of hydrodynamic drag (the resistance that an object meets, when a liquid moves across its surface). The water wheel is fixed to floats, that ensure the blades make contact with the river, so that they catch the current, rotating the ‘barrel’. The rotor generator inside the barrel generates electricity, as the water wheel rotates. Some water wheels are either fixed within a frame and sit on the river bed holding the wheel at a set height. |
