USING PUNCHES TO TEXTURE AND PATTERN

Decorative metal stamps, are ideal for ‘texturing’ a surface, with a defined, repeated pattern. Decorative stamps are used in the same way as a centre punch, being tapped by a hammer. If this is done repeatedly over a surface, it results in a textured finish.
This punch has a butterfly engraved face. It can produce a texture surface, as seen below.
The punch is held firmly in a vertical position and ‘tapped’ from above, with a jewellers hammer or ball pein hammer. The punch is moved to the next position and the procedure is repeated. An even amount of force is applied from the hammer, each time it makes contact with the punch. |

The texturing punch shown below, has been used to create the pattern on the surface of the copper. Punches are sometimes homemade by jewellers and designed to form a unique texture.
