SIMPLIFYING MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS
V. Ryan © 2008-2017
Musical instruments are very difficult to draw as they are often complex and detailed. However, it is possible to create a simple, effective symbol that gives the illusion of the real life instrument. Some examples are shown below. |
||
The electric guitar below has been converted to a symbol in three stages. Most of the detail is first removed leaving a basic outline. The remaining shapes and forms are further simplified and the colour scheme refined.
What do you think of the final symbol? Is it effective? Could you produce a better symbol?
What do you think of the final symbol developed from the detailed guitar seen below?
Below is an example of the famous Flying V Guitar. This has been used for years by rock stars and groups. The guitar has been simplified to a symbol. Because of its well known shape a simplified version is still easily recognisable. |

How effective do you think the transformation from photograph to symbol has been?
Produce a simple and effective symbol from the photograph of the guitar seen below. You should be able to produce two further stages. Add notes to explain your design. |
