6. Product analysis involves looking closely at existing products and identifying how they work, the materials they are made from, the industrial processes used to manufacture them and their key features. It may also involves the designer asking the general public or potential customers what they think of the product. The aim of product analysis is to help the designer develop even better designs and products in the future.

An MP3 docking station is seen opposite. Study it carefully and then complete the analysis, under the subheadings:

MATERIALS:
High density polystyrene has been used to manufacture this MP3 docking station. This means that it can be manufactured in a range of colours, to suit a variety of customers. It is light-weight. Most parts have been manufactured through injection moulding.

STABILITY:
The base of the docking station is quite wide. This means that it is unlikely to be knocked over. The base probably has rubber ‘stoppers’, which prevents the vibration caused by the music/speakers, slowing moving or rattling the station.

COLOUR SCHEME:
This design is manufactured in a range of colours. High Density Polystyrene is available in a very large colour range. This is to attract as many customers as possible.

FUNCTIONS:
The station will dock with the most popular MP3 player. It is supplied with a remote control. The speakers are quite powerful, especially if used in a small room. It will also connect to a USB / computer port. It can be powered by batteries, USB or the mains.

STYLE:
The style is modern and simple. This is deliberate, as most MP3 stations are also ‘minimalist’ in design.

COST: £53
This is an affordable price for a teenager (bought perhaps as a present). It is similar in price to other MP3 stations of the same type. Good value for money.

7. What age group do you think would buy this MP3 docking station?
Teenager would be interested in this type of MP3 docking station. It is modern looking and similar in style to the most popular MP3 players. The cost is within range of most teenagers. A young person is more likely to use this device as a mobile speaker system for their MP3 player.

8. Where would this MP3 be used (e.g. on the move, bedroom, study ?)
It is most likely to be used in a teenagers bedroom or as a portable device. As it is light-weight, it can be transported quite easily.
9. How could the MP3 be improved? You should consider, materials, size, style, strength, aesthetics, cost etc....
I would make it multicoloured. Just using one colour makes the docking station seem a little ‘bland’ or plain. It needs to look a little more exciting. I would also supply it in different versions. The more expensive versions would have quality speakers, whilst the cheaper version would have basic speakers, providing adequate sound.
