10. Product analysis involves looking closely at existing products and identifying how they work, the materials they are made from, the industrial processes used to manufacture them and their key features. It may also involves the designer asking the general public or potential customers what they think of the product. The aim of product analysis is to help the designer develop even better designs and products in the future.

An MP3 docking station is seen opposite. Study it carefully and then complete the analysis, under the subheadings:

MATERIALS:
Veneered MDF has been used to manufacture this MP3 docking station. This means that it can be manufactured in a range veneered finishes, such as mahogany or oak. This will suit a range of customers. The sides have been fixed using rebate joints and PVA glue.

STABILITY:
The docking station is wide and is extremely unlikely to be knocked over. The base has rubber ‘stoppers’, which prevents the vibration caused by the music/speakers, slowing moving or rattling the station.

COLOUR SCHEME:
Supplied in a range of natural wood veneered finishes. It looks as if it is manufactured from solid natural wood. The grain of the wood adds to the quality of the final finish, especially as it has been varnished.

FUNCTIONS:
The station will dock with the most popular MP3 player. It is supplied with a remote control. The speakers are powerful compared to similar ‘plastic’ MP3 docking stations, especially if used in a small room. It will also connect to a USB / computer port. It is powered from a mains supply.

STYLE:
The style is ‘retro’ or ‘vintage’ and simple. This is deliberate, as most MP3 docking stations are also ‘minimalist’ in design. It is aimed at an ‘older’ age range.

COST: £120
This is not an affordable price for a teenager (suitable for an adult). Good value for money, considering that the sound quality is quite high.

11. What age group do you think would buy this MP3 docking station?

Age 30 and over, would be interested in this type of MP3 docking station. It is ‘retro’ or ‘vintage’ looking and at the top end of the affordable docking station range. The cost is within range of most working adults. This is more likely to be used as a set piece of furniture and not moved from room to room.

12. Where would this MP3 be used (e.g. on the move, bedroom, study ?).
It is most likely to be used in a lounge or study. It is not designed as a portable device. It is also a piece of furniture.

13. How could the MP3 be improved? You should consider, materials, size, style, strength, aesthetics, cost etc....
This docking station is a little ‘bland’ or plain. It needs to look a little more exciting. I would also supply it in different versions, such as an Art Deco version or a Bauhaus version. All versions would have high quality speakers and be aimed at the top of the market range.
