RESISTANT MATERIALS EXAMINATION QUESTION
V. Ryan © 2004

The wheel barrow below is manufactured to be strong and mobile. Its main purpose is light gardening work. The large pneumatic wheel allows the wheel barrow to be moved over a typical garden without too much effort.

1. The body is manufactured from aluminium. Name two advantages of aluminium over steel.

ADVANTAGE 1: Aluminium is very light and this means that the wheel barrow can moved around the garden easily.

ADVANTAGE 2: It is rust proof. Even when the barrow comes into direct contact with water, it will not rust.

2. What is meant by a pneumatic wheel / tyre?
This is a tyre filled with pressurised air.

3. What advantage does a pneumatic tyre have over other types of tyre?
The barrow is moved around the garden more comfortably because the tyres 'cushions' the rough ground.

4. The triangular frame is manufactured from one mild steel round section bar. It has been folded (bent) into the form of a triangle and joined together.

With the aid of a sketch, describe a technique that could be used to join the mild steel bar

TECHNIQUES NAME:   BRAZING
DESCRIPTION:

The joint area of the mild steel bar is heated on a brazing hearth. This raises the temperature of the metal to ‘red’ heat. Brazing rod (copper/zinc alloy) is then applied to the joint. The brazing rod melts and runs around the joint. When the joint cools the mild steel bar is permanently joined.
