This reading light has a base manufactured from steel and ‘arms’ manufactured from lightweight, round section aluminium tube.
The LED cluster is arranged in a line, at the end of the upper arm, providing a wide beam of focussed light. It is adjustable in two places - rotation at the base and angle adjustment about the central joint.

MATERIALS: Name suitable materials for the manufacture the task light shown above. Explain your selection.
Steel has been chosen for the base, as it is heavy and provides stability for the rest of the light’s structure. Lightweight, round section aluminium tube has been selected for the arms. This means that they are easily adjusted and when put in a new position, they are unlikely to alter angle, unless there is human intervention. Both the steel and aluminium can be spray finished, which means that this product is available in a range of colours, making it suitable for almost any home and office.

STRENGTH AND STABILITY: Does the task light unit look strong and stable? Is it likely to last many years / decades? Explain your answer.
The heavy steel base gives the task light guaranteed stability. The selected materials are strong and robust and will last for decades. At the end of it’s life cycle, all the materials are fully recyclable. The materials can withstand substantial knocks and drops.

AESTHETICS AND STYLE: What do think of the way the task light looks?
This task light is ‘modernist’ and perhaps even ‘Memphis’ in style. The use of bright paint and the unorthodox style of the task light, suggest a Memphis style. Memphis designs are usually not what you would expect to see. In this case, the shape and style is not what you would expect from a typical task light.
This light will fit in with any modern home or office and it is a feature in its own right. It is unusual and yet functional, appealing to both functionalist and stylists alike.

FUNCTIONALITY: What do you think of the functionality of the task light?
The LEDs are housed in a linear cluster and when the light is turned on, it projects on to a reasonably wide area, making it comfortable for reading and other ‘close up’ tasks. The on / off switch is found at the base and is easy to operate. Adjustment is slightly limited, in that the angle of the arm is basically the only adjustable part, without moving the entire light by hand.
