FORMING CURVED SURFACES WITH A BALL PEIN HAMMER

V.Ryan © 2021

A ball pein hammer is not normally regarded as a tool used by a jeweller. We associate them with sheet steel work. However, as long as they are in good condition, the ‘pein’ side of the hammer head can be used to form curves. The image below shows a copper blank being ‘curved’, using the ball pein hammer and a lead cake (or modern lead fee version, called a ‘rubber bench block’). The copper is carefully manipulated by one hand and the hammer blows applied by the other hand.

In place of a lead cake / rubber block, a jewellers stake or anvil can be used for this process.
