CHAMPLEVÉ

V.Ryan © 2021

Champlevé is an enamelling technique, whereby engraved or etched shapes in the surface of the metal, are filled with enamel and fired.

Engraving the decoration is completed by hand, using a graver or using the acid etching technique. A CNC machine could also be used to create an ‘engraving’, suitable for this enamelling technique.

A ‘holding’ solution (gum tragacanth / water or jewellers cellular adhesive or klyr-fire gum solution) is brushed into the engraved areas.

Enamel powder is sieved over the engraved / etched shape. Excess enamel falls off the copper, when it is shaken / tapped.

The enamel is then fired between 750°C and 850 °C and cleaned using the normal processes.

An alternative to etching / engraving shapes in to the surface of metal, is to use a rolling mill to press shapes in. The ‘textures’ are not as deep as those that are etched. This technique is worth trying.
