TEXTURING HAMMERS

V.Ryan © 2021

Texturing hammers are used on nonferrous metals, that have been annealed. The metal is placed on a firm base, such as a steel block or jewellers anvil. A rubber block can also be used.

Care has to be taken when striking the metal, because it is important that each strike has the same downwards force. Also, the jeweller has to space out each strike / blow of the hammer, so that the pattern is even across the surface of the metal.

This hammer is supplied with a range on textured faces, which can be changed. They are held securely in position by the collets, which screw tight, on either side of the hammer head.

The textured faces shown below, have been used on a sample strip of annealed aluminium. The resulting textures are imprinted on the surface.

Textured punches tend to be more accurate because, the punch has a small face, which can be positioned accurately, before being hit with a hammer. The jeweller can check the position of the punch, before it is struck with force. However, textured hammers are another interesting texturing tool and are used when less accurate work is needed.
