BRIDGE DESIGN - EMBELISHMENT |
V. Ryan © 2012 |
There are several different types of bridge, each designed in a particular decade or century and for a particular purpose. Make a straw ‘girder’ bridge, then select a type of bridge such as stone arch, suspension, cable stay or a box girder. Draw two copies on paper. The paper should fit the sides of your straw model bridge. |
1. Using a scissors, cut two pieces of paper to size, so that they accurately fit each side of the bridge you have made. |
2. Draw the style of bridge you have selected on both pieces of paper, or draw it once and then photocopy the original drawing. |
COMPLETED SIDE |
3. When accurately drawn and enhanced with colour / shade, stick each piece of paper to either side of the bridge. |
4. The bridge is for a strength / compression test with weights. Each side of the bridge will need supporting, so that a side way collapse does not take place, whilst the weights are added. Special supports hold the straw bridge in position. |
