You may have found that if the number of products manufactured is small - all products receive a quality check at every stage of manufacture. On the other hand, if large volumes of a product are been manufactured only a percentage of quality checks are carried out.

Companies operating batch production may select a number from each batch to be checked. This is sometimes called sampling. It is virtually impossible to check every aspect of production when large volumes of a product are flowing down a production line.
