SCALES OF PRODUCTION
V. Ryan © 2002 - 2009
What is meant by 'scales of production' ? Continuous Production: Companies such as those manufacturing products such as shampoos or soft drinks tend to keep the production lines operating for twenty four hours a day and every day of the week. This keeps a constant supply of the product which is then transported to shops and distributors.
Batch Production: Furniture Manufacturers often make furniture in batches. That is to say, a particular design may be manufactured two hundred times and then the production line will be switched to manufacture a different design. Companies that batch produce items are usually capable of switching what they manufacture quite quickly.
Single Item Production: Specialist bicycle manufacturers may hand make bicycles for professional cyclists or for people who have the money to pay for a 'one off'. A fashion designer may be commissioned to design and make a special of individual piece of clothing, this is single item production. Using the table below, describe two examples of manufacturers for each of the scales of production.
