Champions of Europe
(Genova 2005 May 14th)
Rivington and Blackrod Technology
College Students won First Prize for the Best Designed Robot in
Europe and First in their age Group in the city of Genova, Italy.
The students were awarded a prize call the ‘Keys to the City of
Verona’ for Style and Design of the finished Robot.
The team of Chris Cooke and Leo
Coleman-Ollis competed against students from Greece, Poland, Spain,
Belgium, Germany, Italy and the UK to win the prestigious award. The
team came first in their age group in the competition that consisted
of teams from 13 to 19 years. Over twenty four teams represented the
seven countries.
The Robot used Smart Materials
developed through work done with the University of Bolton
(ACCOMPLICE project) to stun the designers from across Europe. The
choice of the right materials meant that our Robot was ‘smart’
enough to beat the off the stiff competition from other Technology
Colleges
Chris and Leo have worked over a
year on the project in the school Engineering Club. They were
supported by Steve Jones and sponsored by Fanuc Robotics. The
students and staff of Rivington and Blackrod Technology department
would like to thank Audrey Beaumont from Liverpool Hope University
for all the support and encouragement and for the fantastic
organisation that made the event possible for the UK teams.
