NOTES You are to select you best idea and draw it in Third Angle Orthographic Projection (Front and Side Views Only). A working drawing is an accurate and detailed drawing, that includes dimensions (measurements) and a Parts List. SEE BELOW FOR INFORMATION REGARDING CREATING A PARTS LIST It should be possible for another person to use your orthographic drawing to make your design. Your drawing should have all the necessary detail for it to be possible to be manufactured. |
|
You may have to draw you design to a
scale of 1:2 (half full size) in order to fit it one the paper. Include
the British Standards symbol for ‘third angle projection’. |

THE PARTS LIST | |
The parts list is a table of important information that includes all the parts / components, dimensions, the number required and the finish applied to each part. This ensures that every part will be cut to the correct size and from the right material. It is closely linked to the product specification and especially the working drawing. When designing a product, a good product designer is compelled to consider the parts required for its final manufacture. Without compiling a parts list, the working drawing (the final definitive drawing) is not complete. Successful manufacture in a factory, workshop or on an assembly line, is unlikely without the Parts List. |
|
ONE EXAMPLE OF A PARTS LIST
THE PARTS LIST AND STOCK CONTROL
For the stock controller / accountant, a parts list is specific information regarding the number of components / parts, that are to be made, assembled or purchased. Consequently, this table of information is vital for stock control and the efficient managing of work / supply in the factory. The part list will determine the type and amount of materials to be held in stock and supplied on a daily basis to the production line. It may also determine the type manufacturing (batch, just in time, continuous, remote, lean...)
THE PARTS LIST AND SELF ASSEMBLY PRODUCTS
If a client / customer purchases a product that requires self assembly, the parts list is often the first ‘table’ he / she checks, when opening the packaging. It is a check list of components to be assembled.
THE DIRECT LINK BETWEEN THE PARTS LIST AND WORKING DRAWING
A working drawing is the final, accurate drawing of the product to be manufactured. The front view of the working drawing seen below, has a series of clearly numbered parts. Each number is replicated in the parts list. The parts list and the working drawing, make it possible for the manufacturer to interpret the design and to make the parts precisely, in a factory / workshop. The parts list can be regarded as a concise set of instructions.
