In Hawaii the sea is not only seen as a great resource but also as a place of enjoyment. Tourists visit the islands from all round the world.
Four symbols seen opposite are often seen at the coast and on beaches. They warn swimmers and tourists of certain dangers.
An effective symbol is simple in design that is easily understood. Usually a symbol will have two or at most three colours.

Select one of the symbols seen opposite. In the space below state whether you think it is an effective symbol or a poor symbol.

The authorities in Hawaii have decided to put a new warning symbol on all pleasure beaches. Recently hospital statistics have shown that a number of swimmers have collided with small rowing boats whilst swimming in the sea. Consequently the new symbol must warn swimmers and rowers of this potential danger. Draw a rough version of your symbol in the space below. Then draw a coloured rendered version. Add notes explaining why you consider your symbol design answers the design problem.
