Year 10 Mechanical Toy  Project

YEAR: 10 SUBJECT: D&T TITLE: MECHANICAL TOY
OBJECTIVE: To introduce the pupils to the design process and a range of mechanisms.
HWK=Homework N=Numeracy C=Citizenship L=Literacy ICT=Information Technology

RESOURCES

Stage One: The pupils will be introduced to a design problem based on the following outline;

‘You are a designer recently employed by a toy manufacturing company to develop a new toy. Surveys have shown that young children enjoy using mechanical toys as they involve movement. Colour is also an important point as these helps keep children interested.

Sales of toys have fallen over the last year and a new, successful product is required.’ The ‘problem’ will be discussed in detail.

L. Pupils read the design problem / brief and discuss the major aspects. They will write a similar problem / brief in their own words.

ICT. Pupils may use WP/DTP the problem.

C. Pupils made aware of the importance of solving problems in the community.

HWK. Present the problem, including graphics to a high standard.

Start collecting research into a range of mechanical toys using the internet, photographs, catalogues etc…. Drawing equipment,

ICT access,

Internet access.

Stage Two: The pupils will be asked to produce a ‘Problem’ and ‘Brief’ - with the addition of graphics.

Pupils will rough out the brief and these will be discussed. They will be shown how to present the work in a graphical manner.

Example Brief;

I am going to design and make a small mechanical toy, comprised of at least two simple mechanisms. The toy will increase company output and profits. It will be safe and durable, able to stand the rigours of use by a young child. The colour scheme will be interesting and attractive. It will also interest parents enough for them to buy it for their children.’

Stage Three: Pupils will be shown a number of ‘rich pictures’ and these will be discussed. Their attention will be drawn to the words arranged round the centre theme and the use of graphics/pictures. Key words will be placed on the white board which will prompt pupils. Pupils will construct accurately a rich picture with ‘Mechanical Toy’ at its centre.

L. Keywords relating to the project. Mind mapping.

N. The prices of existing mechanical/electronic toys will be discussed.

ICT. A graphics package can be used to enhance / present the rich picture.

HWK. Complete a detailed rich picture.

Look at some examples of existing toys and list potential problems and possible improvements - for each toy. Drawing equipment,

 ICT access,

Internet access. Example products.
